This history of ideas dissolves established views of the Age of Enlightenment. Using the example of energy, it states a break with the culture of classicism, draws new lines of connection to romanticism, dissolves traditional opposites of idealism and materialism, virtue and libertinage, sensibility and cruelty, and allows a new view of the era of the Terreur.
