When Ellie Landry's tenth grade history teacher assigns her class a genealogy project, Ellie figures she'll spend an afternoon interviewing old folks at the local nursing home (booooring) and be done with it. Little does she know she's about to uncover family ties that have been purposefully concealed from her, and that her own family tree is more rooted in southern Louisiana folklore than she ever imagined. While investigating her family's past, she discovers that her ancestors' supernatural abilities are very much alive in her. Between being creeped out by her mom's too-friendly new boss, trying not to act like a fool around her crush, and dealing with a classic "mean girl" at school, Ellie's got a lot on her plate already. But when dark forces conspire to recruit her, Ellie must decide whether to use her newfound power to help herself or those she loves.
