Excerpt from Gautama Samhita: Original Text With a Literal English Translation
The Védas, and the ethical rules, observed by those, well-versed in them (vedas), are the source of Virtue (morals). Even' great men are (sometimes) found to transgress the moral laws and to act improperly. Through an innate weakness of the heart, the great sometimes lose sight of the true end of life. In a conflict between two equally authoritative opinions on a particular sub ject, one of them must be followed.
