La plupart des explorateurs se bornent à observer la latitude, et par fois la longitude, de chaque lieu où ils séjournent, mais ils réitèrent rarement ces déterminations indépendantes de manière à diriger le géo graphe, par la comparaison de leurs différences, dans le choix à faire entre des résultats discordants. Pour bien faire on devrait publier en outre les observations elles - mêmes avec la mention des circonstances qui les accompagnaient. Cela ne se fait pas toujours.
