The fourth book in the Canadian series includes discussion of Alberta's geologic history, stratigraphy, and tectonics beginning with the Canadian Shield, the regional tectonic summary, the Hearne Province, the Southern Interior Plains, Phanerozoic cover including the Athabasca Polymorphic Terrane, the Sauk Sequence, the Hume-Dawson Sequence, and western platform, basins, reefs, Pallister Sequence, and a summary of transgression, regression, and tectonism effects. Stratigraphic discussions focus on the Carboniferous, Permian, Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous deposits, closing out with the Tertiary and Quaternary Periods in Part I.
Part II presents the British Columbia Provincial geology beginning with the Precambrian Basement Rocks, and the Cordilleran basement Proterozoic assemblages. The ancestral North American miogeocline and Paleozoic sequences are discussed next. Mesozoic and Cordilleran Terranes are followed by the tectonic history of the Slide Mountain terrane as it relates to Quesnellia. The intermontane Superterrane including the Coast Belts, Alexander, and Wrangellia terranes are included. The section closes out with summary sections on Upper Jurassic to Paleogene assemblages, Neogene, Metamorphism, Quaternary glaciation and sedimentation, and modern plate tectonic regimes.
