Clifford Guard was born in 1923, in the South Wales city of Swansea, into a life of abject poverty. By age 15, he sought escape by joining the merchant navy, and acted on an imperative from his father to reach America where he could forge a different future. When the Second World War broke out, he joined the US Army, where he was nicknamed ‘Limey’ by two friends he’d endure battle with—Trix and The Greek.
