Nabataean Hegra, modern Mada'in Salih, is the Petra of Saudi Arabia. Registered on UNESCO'S World Heritage Site list since 2008, this magnificent natural and archaeological site in the Hijaz is peppered with rock-cut tombs all along the sandstone outcrops scattered on a vast alluvial plain in the middle of the desert. The Nabataeans settled there in the middle of the first century BC when, not wishing to lose their important role in the caravan trade in frankincense and other spices, they travelled south from Petra, their capital in Jordan. At Hegra, they built a huge town surrounded by a city wall, beyond which stretched the necropolises where they buried their dead, as well as the quarter reserved for their religious brotherhoods. In the oasis, they grew palm trees, cereals, all kinds of fruit trees, and even cotton. This guidebook, the first of its kind, offers not only a detailed tour of the site and its superb monuments, but also comprehensive chapters on the history of the Nabataeans, their religion, language, funerary architecture, carving techniques, etc. Complemented with maps, points of interest, a bibliography, and a glossary, it is the indispensable guide for the traveller keen to visit the site and wishing to be told the story of these Arabs who developed a complex and unique civilization in the heart of North Arabia.
