Identifying a lack of social cohesions as the primary reason for Guyana's lack of development and political stability, Gafar (economics, Long Island U., C.W. Post Campus) explores the performance of the former British colony's economy during the period of market liberalization policies. He concentrates on social indicators of welfare as well as standard measures of economic performance. He is generally supportive of market liberalization, claiming that it has generally served Guyana well, but argues that more must be done in the realms of interest rate and capital account policies.
