Coleman Hawkins, the father of modern jazz saxophone, is heard here in what would be his last recording session with strings. Performing as a soloist with the Frank Hunter Orchestra, the mature Hawkins soliloquizes in his trademark gruff yet mellifluous tone. Jazzy versions of classical composers works are included here, namely Schumann's "Traumerei" and Brahms' famous "Lullaby."
HAWK TALK is a superbly rich and lush album. Hawkins displays a real sensitivity to classical music and, perhaps more than any other album, displays a variety of musical timbres. Highlights include the melancholic ballad "Lonely Tenor" and the sultry "Whisper to Me"; the latter is like a candlelit dinner and a warm embrace all wrapped up in one. HAWK TALK is filled with twists of musical irony and soul searching, and is one of the legendary saxophonist's best late releases.
