English summary: The Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH) begins its new series of travelogues from the Middle Ages with the itinerarium of a journey made through Western Europe in 1494/95 by the humanist, doctor and geographer Hieronymus Munzer, who until his death worked in Nuremberg. Why did the different protagonists decide to travel, what did they take in on their journeys and most importantly, where did they travel? The sources provide answers to questions concerning topics including the motivation to travel, practical everyday issues, geographic experiences and the question of orientation. While a partial edition of the Itinerarium published by Ludwig Pfandl in 1902 only reproduced the route taken through Spain, Klaus Herbers for the first time presents the entire text in the form of a critical edition, with a comprehensive introduction and detailed commentary. The work demonstrates the diversity of motifs and interests documented by Munzer when he set out on his journey. Cultural preferences mingle with the worship of relics, an interest in economic developments, and in books and manuscripts. His visits to the two royal courts in Evora/Lisbon and Madrid are the highlights of a journey in which aspects of cosmography, trade and sovereignty are closely intertwined with Munzer's interest in kingship, discovery and the battle against paganism.
