The classic story of Shakespeare's Hamlet has been told many different times in many different ways, but never like this. Hunter, otherwise known as Redneck Hamlet, is a retelling of the Shakespeare classic set in the rural American South, rewritten from the ground up maintaining the pentameter style and analogous representations of the classic characters from Hamlet.
While the adaptation includes many new comedic elements into the classic story, it also utilizes the American South to tackle issues such as toxic masculinity, grief, substance abuse, and mental illness without sacrificing that which makes the story undeniably Hamlet and without using the South as a scapegoat. The play itself wants to use this framework as a way to aptly tackle these issues while entertaining the audience through a timeless story of family and betrayal.
