The long-running Inland Waterways of Great Britain is the only single volume to cover in fine detail all inland navigations in England, Wales and Scotland. This colourful new edition also gives information on recently restored waterways and follows progress on others still under restoration. Jane Cumberlidge has included waterways reopened as part of Millennium events, such as the Forth and Clyde and Union canals in Scotland, and the Rochdale and Huddersfield Narrow canals across the Pennines. She also describes the first new waterway to be built in over a hundred years, the Ribble Link near Preston.
Canal restoration continues into the 21st century. Many waterways that were part of the original 1904 guide (Bradshaw's Canals and Navigable Rivers of England and Wales: A Handbook of Inland Navigation for Manufacturers, Merchants, Traders and Others) but which fell into disuse in the middle of the 20th century, look set to return to navigation in the foreseeable future and their prospects are evaluated in this new edition. By contrast, an extended and updated section looks at waterways now lost to navigation, or possible never finished, with map references for those who enjoy the challenge of searching out waterways history on the ground.
