In this large-format book, Barbara Benjamin Marcus conducted interviews and shot revealing portraits of forty drag queens-both in and out of drag-in Los Angeles, Key West, New York City, Provincetown and Tampa.
Covering Inside Out and Barbara Benjamin Marcus for The Huffingon Post, commentator and media personality Tom Gregory wrote, "Hate is scorched in this book's glaring sunshine . . . Forty souls are featured who fought against hate, bigotry, sexual confusion and alienation in their journey to find peace in a world that would rather they just go away or go to hell."
"It was important to me that each person's voice remained their own, and didn't become mine," says Marcus, who presents her subjects' words unfiltered. "I was empathetic to their stories. I always wanted them to be the most beautiful person in the room."
What becomes clear through the portraits-and accompanying interviews-is that for all the differences that exist between the world of drag and the mainstream culture surrounding it, the common bonds of humanity are as strong. INSIDE OUT shows that the gay men who identify themselves as drag queens also lead lives as professionals, brothers, fathers, caretakers and friends.
INSIDE OUT was the winner in the Gay & Lesbian category at the 2009 San Francisco Book Festival Awards, and official runner up in the Photography/Art Category at the 2009 New York Book Festival. For more information: insideoutthebook.com
