When attorney Mickey Haller is pulled over by the police, they find the body of one of his clients in the trunk. Haller is accused of murder and he cannot make the five million dollar bail set by a judge with a grudge. Mickey represents himself and designs his defense strategy from his cell in Los Angeles. All the while, he must look over his shoulder. Mickey knows he was set up and must rely upon his trusted team including Harry Bosch. He will have to figure out who wants to destroy his life and then prove his innocence to a jury.
