She knows that her lot in life is not a bad one but is also harshly aware of the cold reality of being working class. It was odd, then, that she would fall for Fred Jones, a baronet's son. She knows that there would be little hope for a future with him but figures that there is no harm in a dreamy infatuation... Fred Jones, however, finds Vi enchanting and decides that he wants to marry her. They court in secret until they can find a way to avoid his powerful father's anger, fearful of the harm his influence could do to Vi's family. The secrets do eventually begin make a strain on the couple and one too many threatens to break them apart completely...
