It's folk music, just not as we normally think of it. The melodies here might have their roots in the tradition, but the arrangements and execution have far more in common with the minimalism of
Philip Glass
and
Steve Reich
than your average folkies on their third CD. With accordion, mandolin, violin, and guitar, they manage a very simple sound that's nevertheless surprisingly complex, especially considering that it's recorded live with no overdubs. It's all very English, essentially a contemporary classical quartet taking on English folk music, but on the musicians' own terms. It's quite cinematic and sweeping, a big sound for just four people, incredibly well thought-out. For something quite minimalistic, it's also very emotional music, full of melodic beauty in ways also reminiscent of
the Penguin Cafe Orchestra
, who might be their spiritual ancestors. It's refreshing, and a lovely, fresh take on folk music that never cloys. ~ Chris Nickson
