"In 1983, Lou Reed was enjoying a creative re-birth after making a pair of outstanding, deeply personal albums (The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts) with a new band that was the most powerful and sympathetic group of musicians he'd collaborated with since leaving the Velvet Underground. In February of that year, Reed played a rapturously received series of shows at the New York City rock club The Bottom Line, and a video crew was on hand to document one of the concerts. Lou Reed: A Night With Lou Reed was released on VHS and CED video disc and earned a stellar reputation among Reed's fans as one of his very best live releases, and after years out of print Lightyear Entertainment have finally reissued the title on DVD. Lou Reed: A Night With Lou Reed has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and while the camerawork is not terribly imaginative, the images look admirably sharp given the age of the source materials. The audio has been mastered in PCM Stereo, and sounds sharp and well detailed, capturing the interplay between Reed, guitarist Robert Quine, bassist Fernando Saunders and drummer Fred Maher with welcome clarity that that's impressive when cranked up loud. The songs are in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options. No bonus features have been included with this disc, but anyone wanting to hear Lou Reed playing at the top of his form for an hour with a handful of top-shelf accompanists will still regard this bare-bones release as a worthy purchase; this is a potent, emphatic performance that anyone who cares about Reed's music will want to hear."
