Chet Baker
's regular band of 1978 really stretches out on this Montreal club date, with three of the five songs being over 16 minutes apiece.
Baker
sounds a little off during the melody statement of
"Milestones"
but in general is in fine form. His scat singing on
"There Will Never Be Another You"
is inventive and he also takes a vocal on
"Oh You Crazy Moon."
's own trumpet solos are not that lengthy, meaning that there is plenty of room for
Roger Rosenberg
(mostly on baritone) and pianist
Phil Markowitz
to stretch out. The recording quality is decent if not impeccable.
collectors will want this one although more general listeners can find more essential sets elsewhere. ~ Scott Yanow
