The Mexican transition from single-party rule has been accompanied by more than simply the loosening of the grip of the PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional) on the presidency and a change in political culture. It has also, note the editors (the director and a research associate of the Center for Strategic and International Studies Mexico Project) been occasioned by a transformation in the institutions of government and their relationship with the wider society. They present seven papers in which authors have been tasked with analyzing the evolution of their respective fields under single- party rule, normatively evaluate recent changes, and propose areas in which democratic governance can be advanced. The institutional facets examined by the papers are the relationship between the executive and legislative branches, electoral and budget reforms, the judicial branch, the economy, civil-military relations and security policy, the relationship between the church and the state, and the role of the media in Mexico's political transformation.
