It has been my pleasure to have known Haywood Smith since we were together in Vietnam. My second tour was as a Tactical Air Controller assigned to Marine Observation Squadron 2 at Marble Mountain airfield near Da Nang.
Colonel Haywood Smith commanded the Marine Air Group (MAG 36) which included helicopters and OV10A Bronco's flown by VMO-2. As you might imagine, the Group CO would not be expected to fly the number of missions Haywood did.
I can assure you going into a "hot LZ" in an assault helicopter like the CH46 was a tough way to make a living.
Since those days, Haywood and I have formed a friendship that I value very much. He has the rare ability to make others feel welcome and valued. He is one of my favorite people whom I admire greatly for his remarkable and outstanding service to our country.
Frederick W. Smith
Founder and Executive Chairman, FedEx
We loved Haywood! Daddy called him a "Can Do Man." Haywood found a way to get it done. I was very fond of him. I still am. Haywood remembers his friends and cares about them, including us, right up until this very day.
Lynda Bird Johnson Robb
Daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson
Life goes on for Colonel Haywood Smith. Every day is filled with joy. Or maybe that's my perspective. That is, my life has more joy because of him. We talk almost every day. He's become not just another writing client, but also a dear friend. Here's what I've learned. Take today, with its bad events, good events, calm or exciting, and work hard to make it the best you've ever had.
Stephen Williford
Author Haywood Smith served as President Lyndon Johnson's Military Aide. He flew Air Force One. He rubbed elbows with celebrities. He commanded Marble Mountain Marine Military Base in Vietnam. He flew hundreds of missions and even survived a crash.
That's why his mantra is even more interesting. I'm going to make every day, my best day. The way he practiced and practices it now is a lesson you need to hear.
The stories contained in this book are remarkable accounts of a big life.
