Excerpt from My Run Home
Our early experiences are luxurious. The great liner, delicately kept, strictly disciplined, largely provisioned, is apparently at the disposal of some twenty Australian passengers. We are ministered to by numerous attend ants, oriental of aspect and manner. We revel in commodious unshared cabins. The captain is polite, the first officer amusing, the crew picturesque, the band talented. All is reassuring and rose-coloured.
The passengers seem in joint contribution from all the colonies. A New Zealander or two, a few Indian officers returning from furlough, an American, two or three squatters, a few ladies, no children to signify on the whole, a cheerful and available society.
