What do we do when God is silent? This question was asked by the Jews of Judah during their darkest era, the seventh century BCE. Assyrian forces had ransacked, looted, and burned their once-beautiful land - killing or exiling most of the populace and leaving behind a weakened country, scarred and traumatized, and living under a tyrant's rule. In this environment, evil and idolatry flourished, prophets no longer spoke, and Torah was nearly forgotten. At stake was nothing less than the very survival of the Jewish people. In this spiritual vacuum, three brave new voices arose. Nahum defied the establishment to predict the downfall of an empire. Habakkuk challenged God directly to explain His inscrutable ways. And Zephaniah reminded the people that they too had to improve. Each of these prophets, in his own way, labored to restore hope to the people, promising respite and providing guidance on moving beyond suffering. Their unwavering messages of faith and belief are captured in the three small, often unfamiliar books of Trei Asar-the Twelve Minor Prophets - that bear their names.
