Now that he's enlisted Ellis to help expose Red Gauntlet – which was carried out by a circle of rogue agents known as The Outfit – Barker looks to find their leader, whose code name is Viper. Admitting that he was assigned to be his partner in hopes that he would cooperate with an Internal Affairs investigation, Ellis claims that he now believes Barker is innocent and that Ray does, too. With Ray's help, Barker lures Jonah Michaels, an agent in the Outfit, into a trap. Confronted about Ambassador Morton's assassination, Michaels claims to have no knowledge of the Viper's identity, but does reveal that Morton’s daughter, Grace, didn't actually die, but was spirited out of the country and raised by a female agent. And when Michaels offers to exchange Grace for all the evidence against the Outfit, Barker agrees. Despite the evidence clearing Barker, Conrad discovers that Robicheaux's investigation isn't going to stop. Making his way to FBI Assistant Director Ida Paulson, Barker asks her to get an unedited copy of the top secret Red Gauntlet case file. As his friends work to keep Robicheaux off his trail, Barker learns that a woman named Jane Ross may actually be Grace Morton. After taking out a pair of assassins sent to stop them, Barker and Ellis break into an apartment where they confront Grace. Though the Outfit always told her that he was responsible for her father's death, Barker convinces Grace that she's been lied to and, with his help, she remembers enough about her childhood to realize that he's telling the truth. Having been told to call if Barker ever showed up, Grace summons Michaels to an underground warehouse. Michaels still refuses to reveal anything about Viper, leaving Barker to find him on his own. But when Michaels turns up dead and Robicheaux suspects Barker, Paulson locates the original Red Gauntlet file containing the identities of everyone involved, including Viper. After he and Ellis narrowly escape another attempt on their lives, Barker faxes the file to the FBI field office, which leads to the arrest of Red Gauntlet's leader, Alan Robicheaux – aka Viper. Finally, even though he's been cleared, Conrad chooses to remain on the run so he can continue pursuing the Outfit.
