Bringing together Pantagruel, Gargantua, and the Tiers Livre, this volume accomplishes, while also parodying, the medieval tradition of the "roman de chevalerie," which was the backdrop to the optimistic eulogy of nascent Humanism. It was the product of a rich culture, and the story also echoes the great philosophical, educational, and religious issues of the time.
