, where, as the title suggests, the variations come first, with the theme at the end seeming to distill the variations. The theme and the second variation feature the two pianists alone, while the first and third variations add the orchestra. The album, as a whole, offers a taste of
' style for those who haven't heard his music before; his wide-open harmonies are reminiscent of minimalism, but they move just a bit more quickly, and they are augmented by ambient solo and group voices featuring another
collaborator,
. A few minutes of sampling will be enough for newcomers to determine their susceptibility to
