By no means the group's finest hour,
the Whispers
' debut recording for
Soul Train
isn't exactly a memorable affair. The Los Angeles five piece (soon to become a quartet) made a concerted effort to push forth a record complementing the then fledgling sound of Philadelphia, right down to the chord changes and string arrangements found on the album's title track. But while the efforts to complement the sound were concerted, it ultimately falls flat due to marginal songwriting and session musicians performing as if they were going through a tedious exercise. It's one of the biggest misses in the otherwise quality
imprint, and thankfully the group would hit its stride with subsequent releases before launching into the stratosphere on
Solar
