After the Soviet Union collapsed, Ukranians had to replace their Soviet passports within a year. In 1994-5, in Luhansk, social services employed photographers to photos in the homes of those who were elderly or ill. For photographer Alexander Chekmenev, witnessing how people were living out their final years made a strong impression on him.
