The sudden and altogether unexpected death of Sir Boverton Redwood, just when the revised copy for this present edition of his treatise on Petroleum was in process of being handed to the publishers, has necessitated the prepara tion of this preface by other hands than his own. It was felt by all interested in this work that some personal tribute to the author was needed in addition to that which would naturally find place in a preface, and sincere thanks are tendered to Sir Frederick W. Black, for his graceful Foreword and valuable biographical notes.
