During most of his last 30 years, pianist
Teddy Wilson
was usually featured leading trios. In that setting,
Wilson
tended to sound very comfortable and predictable. This CD has
in a couple more inspired outings, both recorded in England. The first three numbers are played in a quartet with clarinetist
Randy Colville
, while the other six songs are with a quintet featuring clarinetist
Dave Shepherd
and vibraphonist
Ronnie Gleaves
. The songs are all familiar
standards
that
had been playing since the late '30s, but the two clarinetists keep the sparks flying and push
a bit. The uptempo pieces in particular are exciting, making this set well worth picking up by
swing
collectors and
