The music of is little known outside of German-speaking lands, although in those, it has never disappeared from the repertory. was admired by , who was notoriously stingy with praise for other composers. Listening to the first movement of the , one can see why. , like few others on the late 19th century scene, mastered the Brahmsian combination of melodic warmth with a great wealth of implication contained in the basic thematic material. However, was not a mere knockoff; the , is closer to with its lovely long opening melodic line resolving to vigorous rhythms and a folkish finale. The music is not strikingly original, but it is well-crafted throughout, and it receives clean performances from violinist and pianist . This is the second of a pair of albums these performers have devoted to , and it is never less than enjoyable. They make a strong case for more frequent appearances by this composer on chamber music programs. ~ James Manheim
