Excerpt from School Days at Mount Pleasant: Including Sketches and Legends of the Neutral Ground
I was ushered up the plain, well-trodden stairway to the Office, as the business room Of the principal was called. I should have mentioned already that I had come alone; I had no elder brother to pull me along by his side, and my father's business did not allow him time to conduct me further than to the rail way station nearest my home. I was, however, duly ticketed for Sing Sing, which village Of the Hudson is distinguished, as my readers all know, as the site of several Old military schools. Arrived here, I had but to direct the first hack-driver who thrust his eager whip into my face, to take me to the 'mount Pleasant Academy, and I should be safe from all perils by the way. It was, however, with a beating heart that I, a boy of thirteen years, knocked at the door of the principal's room.
