This collection of 28 papers presented at a May 2000 workshop deals with methods and algorithms for solving partial differential equations and linear systems of algebraic equations, and their application to complex engineering problems. Some of the topics are 3D numerical simulation of drop coalescence, anisotropic mesh adaptation through hierarchial error estimators, B-spline collocation methods for elasticity problems, and time-evolving interfaces in a Stokes flow. Applications include correcting the effect of numerical diffusion on gas-solids fluidized beds, time-domain computation of acoustics, a dynamic equilibrium approach to long-term energy planning, and finite element pricing methods for pricing American options on stocks.
