Christian R&B artist Nicole C. Mullen's sophomore album starts out with a joyous, upbeat children's chorus appropriate to her past career as voiceover performer on such shows as YO! KIDS and THE VISUAL BIBLE FOR KIDS. It rapidly cuts to the equally jubilant "Talk About It (Say So)" whose high-octane R&B content has echoes of Al Green's "I Feel Good" from THE BELLE ALBUM, while "Call on Jesus" is more normal Christian fare, slow and ballad-like.
But with "Let Me Go," Mullen has a slow, down-and-dirty winner reminiscent of Lauryn Hill, though Mullen lacks some of the latter's vocal subtlety. Interestingly, Mullen mostly steers away from tried and tested gospel music territory, instead tending toward lighter, almost rock-flavored Christian songs such as "I Can Believe" (chirpy as a Hootie And The Blowfish tune). Still, the album's finale "When Heaven Calls" is an epic-sounding anthem proving that Mullen hasn't left her gospel roots far behind.
