fans will definitely enjoy this collector's CD. Of the 25 selections included from such obscure groups as
the Drakes
,
the Five C's
the Dandeliers
the Earls
the Dewtones
the Palms
, and
the Strollers
, 14 have never been released before. None of these groups, which recorded for the
United
label during 1953-1957, were particularly well known even during the era, but they are all quite musical. Backed by various unidentified musicians (an excellent tenor saxophonist is heard with several of the ensembles), the singers may not be distinctive but all fare well, bridging the gap between
swing
and
rock & roll
