Life first appeared on the Earth more than 3.8 billion years ago, perhaps in a thermal vent deep in an ancient ocean. Since life began, it has remained intricately connected to the planet, but it also has its roots going back to the Big Bang and stars that lived and died billions of years ago. Since its start, life has had an amazing story starting with key innovations making it possible for the arrival of plants and animals. Although, plants and animals are relatively new arrivals, having evolved after the Earth was already 4 billion years old, they rapidly evolved to cover almost every corner of the planet. Today, millions of species inhabit our planet, some are beautiful, weird, or even push the limits of our imagination. Unfortunately, humans threaten the stunning diversity and health of our planet.
