In 1696 the British government required that all loyal citizens affirm their allegiance to King William III, who had displaced King James II in 1688. The surviving oath rolls in the American colonies include lists of names from New York, Virginia, Barbados, Bermuda, and many of the smaller islands in the Caribbean for which few records now survive.
