In The Audacity of Indifference Alex undertakes a journey to understand not only why his mother abandoned his family in his youth but also how she was capable of doing so. Sadly, many children grow up in a single parent family but normally it is the mother who remains. The author was forced to grow up fast as he did so mostly with the absence of his mother while also being raised by a father who struggled with alcoholism. In spite of and perhaps in many ways because of the difficulties from his youth, Alex was able to parlay his childhood adversity into a successful career as a Paramedic. Now Alex has decided to share an intimate no holds barred look into his life with a compilation of stories from both aspects that have helped to shape him. Alex was once a boy with "a mother size hole in his heart" that had to learn to fend for himself. Now he is a man that battles against circumstance and fate as a Paramedic.
