Emotional regulation can be difficult for children and adults alike. It's helpful to think of our emotions as passengers on a bus with a one-way ticket. Unfortunately, we can't drop off passengers at the nearest bus stop when they become unruly or distracting. Our emotions play an integral role in who we are as human beings, and they are along for the ride. However, that doesn't mean emotions always listen to logic or follow our lead. When our emotions become loud and chaotic, it's helpful to remind ourselves that we are sitting in the driver's seat of our bus of emotions. We can take back control, and mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing, can help us do this.
