Mr. Froude nowhere claims the merit of judicial impartiality, nor does he care to weigh evidence in the calm and even scales which determine the value of conflicting testimonies and con tested facts. He is himself carried away by the passions of the age he is describing as strongly as if he had lived in it. He rushes to his conclusions, not by argument, but by intuition. His object appears to be to produce the strongest possible effect by an art not dissimilar from that of a great dramatist.
