This is a cautionary tale of a brief and ill-fated affair between a waitress and a married man. Although he is initially presented as an unmarried gentleman, his true colors become apparent to the reader rather quickly. At times the woman suspects that her lover is "too good to be true", but she is basically clueless about the extent of his deception until it is much too late!
