La fille sur le pont is perhaps the most sensual film made by Patrice Leconte since Le mari de la coiffeuse. Shot in black-and-white in 16mm, the film also evokes a magical quality, so that when Leconte shows a rainbow, or the sunset over the Acropolis in Athens, we see colors. The main theme is confidence, the most important element in any relationship. The film begins with loud and vibrant Turkish gypsy music and immediately cuts to Ad?le, a 21-year-old girl with a self-confidence problem. She faces a psychologist who is only a voice, unseen by the audience. This long monologue is a single take of about seven minutes. The next scene is on a Paris bridge where Ad?le is contemplating suicide. All of a sudden, Gabor appears. He earns his living throwing knives around live targets and a desperate woman is an ideal potential partner. What follows is a road movie with fantastic dimensions. Two lost souls find each, as they travel through Europe trying their luck in posh casinos and always winning. They never make love, but the bond between them is very strong. Both Vanessa Paradis and Daniel Auteuil give perhaps the best performances of their careers.
