The Mississippi River meanders through ten U.S. states on its course from northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. It's rich history is entwined with the history of the United States itself. As a main route for explorers and settlers-and for shipping-"Ol' Man River" spurred the growth of a new nation. Today, the Mississippi River continues to provide a transportation route for agricultural and industrial goods as well as water for millions of people living in the surrounding area.
