Dusty Wilton is a normal teenage boy, or so he thinks. But one day near Christmas he gets a weird letter that he doesn't know what to do with. He thinks that it would be foolish to believe that it was true. But for some reason it stays with him. Soon he finds himself thinking about it at the most random times.
One cold January morning while he's at his church with his father and brother, helping the pastor out with things on the ground something wonderful happens. Before he knows it he's whisked away to another world. One full of things that he's never seen before. But this new world has its dangers too, just like his own. And the first one he runs into is being alone.
He had thought that this was going to be the best part of the adventure. But being alone means that he also has to take care of his needs. So he takes a job and small apartment in the only human city in this world, Shoretown.
In a different part of Shoretown two Elven brothers have also made a temporary home for themselves. They had been tasked by the Creator to watch over the other people in the land, and they took that seriously. But they find the humans odd, and unpredictable, and are unsure how to help them best.
Dusty soon hears about the Elven brothers, and has a feeling that they know how he is going to get home. But fearing the answer to be one that he doesn't want he avoids them for as long as he can. But after being punished for a crime that he didn't do, the younger of the two brothers finds him. And tells them that he had been looking for Dusty for months. Dusty doesn't like the sound of that and runs away as fast as he can.
Neither of the Elven brothers see him again for weeks, and they have to put most of their waking hours in help building the new government with the new king, King Alexander. This keeps them so busy that even the younger brother Sarvin has little time to think about the boy from his visions. But shortly after the coronation a young man knocks on their door asking for their help. His friend was beaten, and now is gravely ill. Sarvin knows at once that it has to be the boy from his visions, the same boy that he had seen. He takes them to his apartment and they heal him.
Once he had his strength back the Elven brothers tell him that he was chosen by the Creator to lead the helpers in his world. Dusty isn't sure that he's ready for that much responsibility. But they assure him that they can help grow into the leader that he was meant to be. But his visit was coming to an end so they had to hurry. He agrees and moves into their cottage with them so they could mentor him in the evenings when he returned from his job.
Then just as suddenly as the whole adventure started it ended, and he was once again in the basement of his church. But he wasn't the same person that had gone. He was embarrassed by the way he had been acting but wasn't sure how he could make it up to his family.
He also knew that know he was just going to have to wait for the next person to go to Alia. And help them when they got back. Because if they were half as changed as he was when he got back he knew that they would be grateful for a friend.
