Excerpt from The Propagation of Electromagnetic Plane Waves in Plane Parallel Layers A theory on the propagation of plane waves through layers has application in ultra-high - frequency engineering independently of its use in the theory of propagation through the atmosphere. As an example, often a surface is coated with a.layer of some substance so as to absorb incident radiation, which can usually be regarded as being a.plane wave. The air, the coating, as well as the surface coated, constitute three layers and the present theory can.be applied to determine the behavior of the incident radiation. In particular, the reflection and transmission through the layers and the polarization of the reflected radiation can be determined. The present theory can also be used, though developments of this nature have not actually been carried out in this paper, to study the polariza tion of reflected waves from a series of layers and to ascertain the condi tions under which one may retain the linear polarization of the reflected wave on the assumption that the incident radiation is also linearly polarized.
