Excerpt from The Risks and Dangers of Various Occupations: And Their Prevention
This work is intended mainly for the perusal of employers of labour, foremen, and intelligent workmen. It is hoped it may also be useful to sanitary inspectors, and even on occasion per haps to medical men. It deals with the risks and dangers (the essential risks and dangers only, those incidental to the occupations) of most of the important industries of this country, their mode of onset, a few of the chief symptoms which may give the workman a note of warning, and the measures which may be taken both by employers and em ployed to prevent them. The language throughout is strictly simple, and only terms which can be readily understood by any fairly educated individual have been. Made use of. No scientific classification has been attempted, the various trades being arranged in the form which appears to me most likely to be of practical use. Many of them are referred to under two or more headings, cross references are made when necessary, and thus needless repetition saved.
