On a cold winter day, I went downstairs to refill the bird seed in a five gallon can from recently purchased bags, so it would be ready when Spring came. The can was not empty. It had about three inches of seed left. As I leaned over to pour, I found a little gray mouse looking up at me. He was trapped by the low level of seed. We looked at each other. What to do? How did he get inside? There must be a crack in the siding just small enough to squeeze through. I finally decided to take the seed can and its occupant over to the park across the street and release it. I walked over to a line of trees and bushes and tipped the can over. The little fellow flew out of the can and disappeared into the foliage. I'm sure it was a relief for both of us. I was astonished to find my little visitor had prepared deposits of seeds among the shelving. It was obvious he was setting up caches so he would not go hungry if I moved the seed can. That's what I call enterprise! Little gray mouse, I salute you!
