Excerpt from The Tragedy of Lord Kitchener
I had known Lord Kitchener for some years. He had written to me frequently upon military subjects, and there were two occasions in his life which mattered much to him when we came into personal contact. Perhaps this was a reason why, in Sep tember, 1914, he asked me to go to France. I did so, and from that time until his death I remained there on and off at his request.
