In an effort to find his lost brother, Iowa farmer turned businessman, John Mathews, goes deep into a forest and steps onto a long-buried platform. He is instantly teleported to an icy world with two suns. He returns home via the platform to make preparations to further explore this new world and soon finds himself captured by aliens who feast on native humans at will.
Close to marriage with a woman back home, John falls deeply in love with KathAhn, a true intelligent beauty on the other world, who returns his love. Together, they make plans to defeat the alien scourge.
John discovers that the platform has twelve settings, each of which leads to different location in the galaxy, many of which have abandoned cities, all belonging to a vast and ancient network. Entangled with women problems, he woefully discovers there is no place in the universe to hide.
