A Texas woman, Matilda Zachary (Lillian Gish), and her sons (Burt Lancaster, Doug McClure, and Audie Murphy) must battle off a tribe of Kiowa Indians when it is discovered that her adopted daughter, Rachel (Audrey Hepburn), is actually of Indian birth. Unwilling to surrender Rachel to the Kiowas, the Zacharys must fight to keep her.
