Let us, however, instead of croa ng, stand u and quit ourselves like men, and especially as becomes Englis men; leaving the people of less favoured nations to wrap themselves 11 in the worn-out and threadbare vestments of protection. 9 may be thankful that we, at all events, are not compelled by law to buy in the dearest market instead of the cheapest, and that whatever else we may have, we have colonies which, with one lamentable exception, where a retrograde policy has been attempted, are free from the taint of this bugbear, and that our trade with them is ever on the increase, to our mutual advan tage. And we have the wide world (span to us, vast portions of it waitin to be cultivated on soun commercial principles; notably fries and China, with their untold millions of mha bitants, presenting boundless opportunities for the profitable employment of British enterprise and capital, and the skill of En lish engineers.
